Formerly Cruelty-Free Brands Now Sold in China

Smashbox, Makeup Forever, Origins, and OPI are just a few of the brands that broke my heart by choosing to betray their cruelty free ideals over the past several years.

Unfortunately, these and many other companies have chosen profit over ethics and entered the Chinese market.  Many consumers are unaware that China’s government requires all imported beauty products to be tested on animals in order to be sold in mainland China, which means the following brands sadly cannnot be considered cruelty-free (CF):

  • Almay
  • Avon
  • Batiste
  • Bath & Body Works
  • Beauty Rush (Victoria’s Secret)
  • Benefit
  • Bobbi Brown
  • Bourjois
  • Bumble & Bumble
  • Chanel
  • Clinique
  • DKNY/Donna Karan
  • Elizabeth Arden
  • Estee Lauder
  • Kerastaste
  • Lancome
  • Laura Mercier
  • MAC
  • Mary Kay
  • Makeup Forever
  • Marc Jacobs Fragrance*
  • Method
  • NARS
  • Nivea
  • N.Y.C. (New York Color)
  • Ogx (Organix)
  • OPI
  • Origins
  • Revlon
  • Sephora Collection*
  • Sinful Colors
  • Smashbox
  • Stila
  • Tom Ford
  • Victoria’s Secret

*Marc Jacobs Beauty is cruelty free, but his fragrances are sold at Sephora China.

**Sephora’s in house/store brand is sold in China, but many cruelty free brands are available at [American] Sephora.

Does any of this information surprise you?
Would you be willing to replace products in your current beauty routine if purchacing them contributes to the suffering and death of countless innocent animals?
